Stroke and How to Prevent It from Happening?

According to the Department of Health (DOH), stroke remains to be the leading cause of disability and death in the Philippines.

Stroke is a disease that affects the arteries leading to and within the brain. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or ruptures. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood and oxygen it needs, so it and brain cells die.

These are the different types of strokes:

  1. Ischemic Stroke (Clots)
This occurs when a blood vessel supplying blood to the brain is obstructed. It accounts for 87 % of all strokes. Clot obstructing the flow of blood to the brain.
  2. Hemorrhagic Stroke (Bleeds)
Occurs when a weakened blood vessel ruptures and prevents blood flow to the brain. The most common cause of hemorrhagic stroke is uncontrolled high blood pressure.
  3. TIA (Transient Ischemic Attack)
Called a mini-stroke, it’s caused by a serious temporary clot. This is a warning sign stroke and should be taken seriously.
  4. Cryptogenic Stroke
In most cases, a stroke is caused by a blood clot that blocks the flow of blood to the brain. In some instances, despite testing, the cause of a stroke can’t be determined. This is called a cryptogenic stroke.

The best way to prevent stroke is:

  1. Diet – an unhealthy diet can increase your chances of having a strike because it may lead to an increase in the blood pressure and cholesterol level. A low fat and high fiber diet is usually recommended along with plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grain. Also, limit your intake of salt to only 6 grams per day.
  2. Exercise – combining your healthy diet with regular exercise is the way to maintain a healthy weight. It can also help lower cholesterol and keep your blood pressure healthy.
  3. Stop smoking. Smoking significantly increase your risk of having a stroke. This is because it narrows your arteries and makes your blood more likely to clot. Not smoking will also improve your general health and reduce your risk of developing other serious conditions such as lung cancer and heart diseases.
  4. Cut down on alcohol. Excessive alcohol consumption can lead to high blood pressure and trigger an irregular heartbeat, both of which can increase your having a stroke. Alcoholic drinks are high in calories, they also cause weight gain.
